Vegetation is lush along the edge of the Jordan Craters lava field. Jordan Craters is a 27-square mile olivine basalt lava flow that is estimated to be between 4,000 and 9,000 years old, based on the degree of lichen development on the rocks. An 18-acre flow within the field is thought to be less than 100 years old because not even lichens have begun to colonize it.
