The Capri Restaurant is a Boise institution. An original 1950's diner serving up home style meals and what many would argue “the best biscuits and gravy in the world.”

When Jim’s Coffee Shop in Boise’s North End closed in January, many wondered about the fate of Rudy, the 7-foot-tall fiberglass rooster that stood on the cafe’s roof since the 1960s.
Nick West, owner of the Capri Restaurant and Delsa’s Ice Cream Parlour, bought him and put him in safekeeping. West intended to reinstall the famous bird on the roof at Delsa’s. But after conducting an informal poll on Facebook and talking to friends and neighbors, West decided Rudy belonged at the Capri.
“North Enders feel like Rudy is a North End landmark,” said West. At the Capri, at 2520 W. Fairview, Rudy gets to stay pretty close to his original home on Fort Street.
West was also concerned for Rudy’s safety. After removing Rudy from the roof at Jim’s, West was surprised to find that the bird had been shot two times.
“Rudy had entry and exit wounds,” said West.
At the Capri, Rudy is reachable only by crane. Anyone with a ladder could have reached him on Delsa’s roof.
Once West decided to install Rudy at the Capri, he decided to re-do the restaurant’s roof as well, repair the rotation mechanism in the restaurant’s sign and make other upgrades. A painter offered to repair Rudy’s bullet wounds and give him a new coat of paint.
“He’s all pretty up there now,” said West.
West kept Rudy’s installation quiet. He only told around 10 people. But 100 or more people showed up to watch Rudy get hoisted aloft at midnight on March 31 (2016). They cheered when the bird’s bright yellow feet came to rest on their new perch.
“If I had known it was going to be that cool, I would have fired up the grill and cooked everyone breakfast,” said West.
