IIdaho Statesman reporter Rachel Roberts interviews Boise teammates Emily Hamlin and Madison Lung at the Idaho 5A State Track & Field Championships at Dona Larsen Park, Boise, Idaho on May 17, 2014
This is the article from the May 18, 2014 Idaho Stateman:
SIC four-titude: Boise distance runner wins four 5A girls races
BOISE — Walking side by side with teammate Madison Lung, Emily Hamlin held a bag of ice against her forehead. It was the first time in two days the Boise High junior showed any signs of exhaustion, but who could blame her?
Competing in the 5A track and field meet at Dona Larsen Park, Hamlin completed the distance trifecta with unprecedented speed. Her winning times Saturday in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 13.23 seconds) and 1,600 (4:55.06) established overall state meet records, and her 3,200 win (10:47.02) Friday night was a classification best.
Having already run a combined 14 laps at a record-setting pace, Hamlin topped off the weekend by running the third leg of Boise's first-place 4x400 relay in the final event of the meet.
"All of the races kind of went by in a blur, but the 800, my legs are tired, and I went into it thinking, 'Pressure's off, I'm just going to go out and have,' and I had fun," the understated Hamlin said.
Added Boise coach Cori Mooney: "Honestly, our whole coaching staff is speechless."
Hamlin employed the same strategy in each of her individual wins, running just behind the right shoulder of Mountain View's Sam McKinnon - who held the lead going into the final lap in all three races - before sprinting ahead of the field somewhere between the last 200 to 100 meters.
"That's how I run best," Hamlin said.
